Charge iPhone 12 wirelessly: Apple presents new MagSafe accessories

iPhone 12 owners have recently found new accessories for wireless charging from Apple, which are particularly useful on the go. A few months ago there were the first rumours about the MagSafe accessories that are now available.

After there were reports about a MagSafe battery a few months ago, the portable energy dispenser is now officially available. Owners of the iPhone 12 mini, in particular, should look forward to such accessories, as the battery runs out of air prematurely due to the small housing. But users of other models of the iPhone 12 can also use the battery with their smartphones thanks to MagSafe.

Fort the iPhone 12: Apple presents the external MagSafe battery

As the name “MagSafe” suggests, the new battery from Apple can simply be docked to the back of an iPhone 12. Thanks to the magnets, it stays on the case even when the smartphone is moved – just as it is the case with other MagSafe accessories.

The charging process works wirelessly after docking – according to Apple, up to 5 watts are possible. The MagSafe battery itself is charged via a Lightning cable. In line with the new hardware, Apple will also be releasing iOS 14.7 in the coming days. Among other things, the new software brings with it a corresponding update, which shows the current charge level of the external MagSafe battery.

This integration is an advantage that other products such as Anker’s “ PowerCore Magnetic 5K ” or the “ Powerbank Wireless Magnetic ” from Xlayer cannot offer. Another feature of Apple’s MagSafe battery is the ability to use it at home on the mains as a conventional charging puck for the iPhone. In this configuration, according to Apple, the smartphone can be charged with up to 15 watts. A suitable power supply unit with at least 20 watts is required.

In the same support document, Apple also hides the reference to reverse wireless charging in the iPhone 12. It should also be possible to charge the battery and iPhone at the same time by first connecting the MagSafe battery with the smartphone and then the iPhone with a Power source connects. This is useful, for example, if you want to transfer data from the iPhone while the phone is charging. In this case, Apple’s external MagSafe battery is powered wirelessly from the iPhone. It is unknown whether Apple will extend this ability of the iPhone 12 to AirPods or other devices.

Apple’s external MagSafe Battery: Specifications and Price

Apple specifies the capacity as 11.13 Wh (7.62 V, 1460 mAh). So far it is not known how far you can load the different versions of the iPhone 12 with it. The competition from Anker offers 18.5 Wh (3.7 V, 5,000 mAh) and, according to the manufacturer, can charge an iPhone 12 mini 1.2 times. With the iPhone 12 Pro Max, however, it is only enough for 75%. The first tests will show how Apple’s power bank will fare.

The external MagSafe battery is now available in the Apple Store at a price of 99£. The MagSafe battery for iPhone is only available in white. Delivery begins on July 22nd. Anker’s alternative is available on Amazon for around 36 euros .
