About every fifth iPhone or iPad user stated that they would refrain from buying with the name “iPhone 13”. In many countries, the number is viewed as a harbinger of bad luck.

The respondents were in favour of a different name for the next iPhone. In their opinion, Apple should just use the year of release. Accordingly, the next smartphone would come on the market as “iPhone 2021”. It remains questionable, however, whether Apple will really give in to this pressure.
Apple already uses this scheme for Macs and iPads, but it would be a novelty for the iPhone series. Should the name and thus the numbering be changed, Apple would have to communicate this to the customers in order to avoid confusion. Otherwise, many might think that this is a different device rather than the flagship iPhone.
